Luminara!

Happy Friday everyone! Today’s comic is inspired by the up coming Lantern Festival that takes place this Saturday at Beacon Hill Park called Luminara. (I call it Illuminara in my comic in case anyone get’s fussy w/ copy right 
)! It’s a festival of lights, music, laughter, food, fire and fun! Andy and I are going and I decided that we should make lanterns! Or rather… that I would make us some lanterns! Now, the proper way to make a lantern is to create a frame w/ thin bamboo strips and then tissue paper the frame w/ glue to harden it and provide a protective fire proof coating. However, I’m a little pressed for time so I’m making the poor man’s lantern ^^ I’ll share w/ you the steps!
- Blow up a balloon! (color is not important)
- think of a design that you can create on a half moon canvas so to speak. (around the balloon)
- Cut of the tissue paper (in colors of your choosing, depending on design) into squares about 3×3 inches.
- Get a white glue or a decoupage type paint and a wide paint brush and start decoupaging the balloon! This is a base coat so just lay down your colors but don’t worry too much about detail.
- Wait for it to dry, then start your second layer w/ the main pattern. I go just under 3/4 of the way up.
- Let it dry over night!
- Pop the Balloon!
- Hole punch two holes eqi-distant and tie a string, then attach it to a bamboo stick and TA DA! You have a lantern.
Mine are almost done, so I’ll be sure to post pics of them tomorrow <3! I’m so excited!!!!! There’s going to be people dressed up as all sorts of things, live music, fire dancers and lanterns galore!
